The short version
Most houses look right on a 4 weekly or 8 weekly clean. Four weekly keeps glass looking permanently done and is what most people on a main road end up choosing. Eight weekly is the most popular on quieter estates, and it is what the majority of our round runs on.
Anything longer than about twelve weeks and you stop paying for maintenance and start paying for a restoration every time, because the dirt has had long enough to bond to the glass and the frames.
What actually makes the difference
How close you are to a road
Traffic film is the single biggest factor. A house on the A5 or the Queensway picks up a grey haze noticeably faster than the same house two streets back. If you can hear the road from your front garden, assume four weekly.
Trees, and what kind
Sap and leaf debris are worse than dust because they are sticky. Lime, sycamore and silver birch are the usual culprits. If your car needs washing more often than your neighbour's, your windows do too.
Which way your house faces
A south-facing elevation bakes whatever lands on it, so marks set hard. North-facing glass stays damp longer and grows a green film at the edges, particularly on shaded gable ends.
Whether you are near open fields
Around the edge of Telford, Shifnal and out towards Newport, harvest and muck-spreading put a fine dust on everything for a fortnight. Plenty of houses out that way sit on eight weekly for most of the year and pull it in during late summer.
Why the frames matter more than the glass
Glass forgives you. UPVC does not. Left long enough, the black spotting on frames and the green line along the bottom of the sills stop being dirt and start being growth, and that takes a proper clean to shift rather than a routine one.
Every clean we do includes the frames, sills and doors as standard, which is the part that keeps a house looking cared for between visits. It is also why a regular slot costs less per visit than a one-off: nothing has had chance to set.
A quick test: run a finger along the bottom edge of a window frame. If it comes away grey, you are due. If it comes away green, you are overdue.
What we would suggest, by house
- Terrace or semi on a main road: 4 weekly.
- Estate house, set back, few trees: 8 weekly.
- Detached with a conservatory: 8 weekly, with the conservatory roof done once or twice a year.
- Village or edge-of-town, open fields behind: 8 weekly, pulled in over harvest.
- Rented out or between tenants: one-off before viewings, then decide.
